NSF REU Site: CHEM FAST (Function, Application, Structure, and Theory )

CHE-1560555 (2016-2020) and CHE-1852511 (2020-2023)- Stefan France, PI

The Chemistry Function, Application, Structure, and Theory (Chemistry FAST) Program is a 10-week, interdisciplinary summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) hosted by the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). CHEM FAST is supported by under NSF award #1560555 (2016-2020) and NSF award #1852511 (2020-2022). The objective of the Chemistry FAST program is to provide a high-quality research experience, augmented by experiential learning components, for a diverse cadre of undergraduate students. The program will provide participants with encouragement and preparation to pursue advanced studies and/or careers in the sciences while emphasizing the importance of collaboration and interdisciplinarity in chemistry. 

ACS Bridge Site: GT-CREATER

(Graduate Training in Chemical as a Roadmap Enabling Access through Teaching, Education, and Research)- Stefan France, Project Leader

GT-CREATER is an American Chemical Society (ACS)-funded Bridge Site that is tasked with providing a chemistry-led, integrated learning environment that incorporates high-quality research, assessment-based teaching experiences, and focused professional development. The mission of the GT-CREATER Bridge Site is to use the GT School of Chemistry and Biochemistry (SoCB) thesis-based MS program to provide transitional training from BS to PhD in order to ensure that more students from underrepresented groups enter and are successful in PhD programs.

NOBCChE: National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers

GT-NOBCChE (Stefan France, faculty co-advisor)

The aim of the Georgia Tech Chapter of NOBCChE is to aid in the support and development of Georgia Tech’s black undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and research scientists both educationally and professionally. GT-NOBCChE utilizes the resources provided through partnerships with the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering to assist members through their time at Georgia Tech and help in their transition into “life after Tech” – whether it be higher education programs or the job market. Additionally, GT-NOBCChE is heavily dedicated to, and engaged in, community outreach efforts. Most of these efforts consist of introducing young elementary, middle, and high school students to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. Through various experimental demonstrations and one-on-one discussions, we plan to encourage young minds to push forward and explore their scientific aspirations on a higher level. The Chapter regularly sends members to the National Conference to present research and network.

The Chemistry REU Leadership Group (LG) is composed of a subset of REU Site Directors and is supported by a special grant from the NSF. The mission of the LG is to improve the REU program through workshops, travel grants, symposia, and other innovative activities and provide guidance to current and prospective REU Site PIs. The LG serves as an important advocacy group for the chemistry undergraduate research community nationwide.
